Zivilaviation, the German term for civil aviation, refers to non-military aviation conducted for transport, commerce, recreation, or research. It encompasses commercial air transport, general aviation, cargo operations, and aerial work such as surveying and agricultural spraying. Civil aviation operates within a global framework of safety, security, and environmental rules designed to ensure reliable and accessible air travel.

The 1944 Chicago Convention established key rules on airspace sovereignty, aircraft registration, licensing, and the peaceful use of air transport. Industry coordination comes from IATA. National authorities, such as the FAA or EASA, grant certification, oversee operators, and enforce regulations.
