Zincsmiths

Zincsmiths are artisans who specialize in shaping zinc and zinc-based alloys for architectural, decorative, and functional objects. They work with building elements such as zinc cladding and roofing, as well as decorative panels, railings, and small-scale sculpture. The term combines zinc with smith, reflecting the traditional craft lineage of metalworking trades.

Historically, zinc gained widespread use in architecture during the 19th and early 20th centuries, leading to a specialized form of metalwork sometimes referred to as zincsmithing. Zincsmiths exploit zinc’s properties—low melting point, ductility, good corrosion resistance, and recyclability—to produce delicate relief work, weathered surfaces, and continuous façades.

Techniques employed by zincsmiths include hammering and repoussé for relief work, engraving and chasing for detail, and soldering, brazing, or welding for joints. Modern practice also incorporates cold forming, CNC cutting, laser engraving, and protective coatings. They may work with various zinc alloys, such as pure zinc, zinc-aluminium ZA alloys, and zamak, depending on the application and production method.

In contemporary contexts, zincsmiths operate in independent studios, restoration workshops, and small metalworking firms. They collaborate with architects, conservators, and artists on new construction, restoration of historic zinc features, and contemporary sculpture. The field overlaps with broader metalworking, architectural metalwork, and conservation disciplines.
