Zementestriche, often translated as cement screed, is a construction material used to create a level and smooth surface, typically as a base for final floor coverings. It is a mixture of cement, sand, and water, and sometimes includes additives to improve its properties. The primary function of a cement screed is to provide a stable and even substrate for subsequent layers such as tiles, wood flooring, carpet, or vinyl.

The application of cement screed involves spreading the mixture over a prepared subfloor, often a concrete slab or insulation layer. It is then leveled using screeding rails and a straight edge to ensure a consistent thickness and a perfectly flat surface. The thickness of the screed can vary depending on the intended use and the type of subfloor, but it generally ranges from 40 to 100 millimeters.

There are several types of cement screed. Traditional cement screed is the most common. Flowing screed, also known as self-leveling screed, incorporates synthetic anhydrite or gypsum binders and has a more fluid consistency, allowing it to spread and level itself with minimal manual intervention. This type is often faster to install and can achieve very high levels of flatness.

Curing is a critical stage in the process. The cement screed needs time to harden and gain strength. This curing period can take several weeks, and during this time, the moisture content of the screed must be carefully managed. Insufficient drying can lead to problems with the final floor covering, such as warping or adhesion failure. Before applying any final floor finish, it is essential to ensure the screed has reached its required dryness, often tested using a hygrometer.
