Zeepindustrie refers to the industry involved in the production and sale of soap. Soap is a cleaning agent used for personal hygiene and household cleaning. Historically, soap production was a small-scale artisanal craft, but it evolved into a major industrial sector with the advent of new technologies and mass production methods.

The fundamental process of soap making involves saponification, a chemical reaction where fats or oils are heated with an alkali, typically lye (sodium hydroxide for solid soap, potassium hydroxide for liquid soap). This reaction produces soap and glycerin. Early soaps were often made from animal fats and wood ash, while modern soaps utilize a variety of vegetable and animal oils.

Significant advancements in the industry include the development of synthetic detergents, which offer superior cleaning power in hard water and can be formulated for specific cleaning tasks. The industry also faces considerations related to environmental impact, particularly regarding the sourcing of palm oil, a common ingredient, and the biodegradability of its products.
