Yrkesintroduktion

Yrkesintroduktion is a Swedish upper secondary school program designed for students who need extra support to enter working life or continue education. It is one of the introductory programs (introduktionsprogram) within gymnasieskolan and aims to reduce dropouts by combining skills training with guidance and work experience.

The program emphasizes learning through a mix of classroom teaching and arbetsplatsförlagt lärande (APL), i.e., workplace-based learning. An individual study plan guides each student and coordinates school-based instruction with practical training in partner workplaces. The curriculum focuses on practical vocational skills within a chosen area, complemented by general education subjects and training in employability, safety, communication, and digital literacy.

Length and administration vary locally. Yrkesintroduktion is typically offered for a limited period, often around one academic year, but the duration can be extended based on the student’s development and local arrangements. Access is generally open to students who have completed compulsory schooling and seek an introduction to work-oriented studies; education and support are financed by the municipality, with schools responsible for planning, guidance, and assessment.

Outcomes and progression are individualized. The program aims to strengthen employability and provide a pathway to further vocational education, apprenticeships, or entry-level work. Completion may lead to an assessment of gained competencies and, in some cases, eligibility for admission to other vocational programs or continued studies, depending on the student’s goals and local provisions.

Historically, Yrkesintroduktion was introduced to bridge gaps between compulsory schooling and the labour market, addressing diverse needs and improving transition opportunities for young people.
