Ylälakana

Ylälakana is a flat sheet used as the top layer of bed linen. It is laid over the fitted sheet (aluslakana) and beneath a duvet, blanket, or other top covering. The sheet provides a clean barrier between the sleeper and the bedding, helps regulate temperature, and can protect the duvet from wear and oils transferred from the body.

In Finnish usage, ylälakana is commonly included in traditional bed linen sets, but practices vary. Some people sleep with only a fitted sheet and a duvet covered by a duvet cover, while others keep a top sheet for hygiene or comfort. The choice can depend on season, climate, and personal preference, and it is also influenced by regional or household traditions.

Materials and sizes: Ylälakana is usually made of cotton, cotton blends, or linen, in fabrics such as percale or sateen. Sizes follow standard bed widths (single, double, and larger), with lengths typically around 200 cm to fit common European beds. The design is generally simple and easy to wash.

Care: Ylälakana should be washed according to the label, typically at 60 °C to remove allergens and stains. It can be tumble dried on low heat or line dried, and ironed if desired. Proper care helps prevent wrinkles and extends the life of the sheet.

Cultural note: In some Nordic households and in modern hospitality settings, the use of a top sheet is optional, with preferences shifting toward minimal layering and reliance on a duvet and fitted sheet.
