Ylähengitystieinfektiot, commonly known as upper respiratory tract infections, are conditions affecting the nose, throat, sinuses, and larynx. These infections are predominantly caused by viruses, although bacteria can also be responsible. The most frequent symptoms include a runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, coughing, sneezing, and sometimes mild fever and body aches.

The transmission of these infections typically occurs through respiratory droplets expelled when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. Close contact with an infected individual, as well as touching contaminated surfaces and then touching one's face, are common modes of spread. Children, due to their developing immune systems and close contact in group settings like schools and daycare, are particularly susceptible.

Diagnosis is usually based on the patient's reported symptoms and a physical examination. Management focuses on relieving symptoms through rest, adequate fluid intake, and over-the-counter medications for pain and fever.
