Yleistymistä, often translated as generalization, is a core concept in learning and cognition. It refers to the process of applying knowledge or experience gained in one situation to new, similar situations. This allows individuals and systems to make predictions and decisions without having to learn every single scenario from scratch. In human learning, generalization enables us to recognize a new dog as a dog, even if it's a different breed from one we've seen before. We extract common features and apply them broadly.

In machine learning, generalization is a critical measure of a model's success. A well-generalized model can perform accurately on unseen data, indicating that it has learned underlying patterns rather than simply memorizing the training examples. Overfitting occurs when a model learns the training data too well, including its noise and specific idiosyncrasies, leading to poor generalization. Techniques like regularization, cross-validation, and early stopping are employed to improve a model's ability to generalize. The ultimate goal in many AI applications is to build systems that exhibit robust and effective generalization.
