Yleiskasvualusta

Yleiskasvualusta, or the general education system in Finland, is a structured and comprehensive framework designed to provide all children and young people with equal access to education. The system is governed by the Finnish National Board of Education and is divided into several key stages, ensuring continuous learning from early childhood through to upper secondary education.

The foundation of the system begins with early childhood education, which is voluntary and focuses on play-based learning for children aged 0 to 6. This stage aims to foster social, emotional, and cognitive development in a nurturing environment. Following this, compulsory basic education spans from ages 7 to 16, typically covering grades 1 through 9. This stage emphasizes a well-rounded curriculum that includes Finnish, mathematics, sciences, social studies, arts, physical education, and foreign languages. The goal is to equip students with essential knowledge, skills, and values while promoting critical thinking and creativity.

After completing basic education, students can choose between two main pathways: upper secondary education or vocational education and training. Upper secondary education, lasting three years, offers a broader academic curriculum and prepares students for university or polytechnic studies. Vocational education, on the other hand, provides specialized training in various fields, combining theoretical learning with practical work experience through apprenticeships.
