Yksittäiskiteet, or single crystals in English, refers to a solid material in which the crystal lattice of the atoms, molecules, or ions is continuous and unbroken throughout the entire sample. In contrast, polycrystalline materials are composed of many smaller crystals, or crystallites, with grain boundaries between them.

The properties of single crystals can differ significantly from those of polycrystalline materials. For instance, their mechanical, optical, and electrical characteristics are often anisotropic, meaning they vary depending on the crystallographic direction. This anisotropy arises because the arrangement of atoms and the bonding between them are not uniform in all directions.

Single crystals are important in various technological applications. For example, in the semiconductor industry, silicon single crystals are crucial for manufacturing integrated circuits. The precise and ordered atomic structure of a single crystal allows for predictable electronic behavior. In optics, single crystals like sapphire or quartz are used for lenses and windows due to their transparency and specific refractive properties. Growing high-quality single crystals, often through methods like the Czochralski process or the Bridgman technique, is a complex but vital aspect of materials science and engineering.
