Yksittäiskäyttäjätila, often translated as "single-user mode," is a diagnostic boot mode found in many operating systems, particularly Unix-like systems such as Linux and macOS. Its primary purpose is to allow a system administrator to troubleshoot and repair issues when the operating system fails to boot normally or when certain services are preventing access.

In single-user mode, the system boots to a command-line interface, typically a shell prompt, without loading most of the standard system services or graphical user interface. This minimal environment is crucial because it ensures that critical system files and processes are not locked or in use by other services, making them accessible for modification or repair. Common tasks performed in single-user mode include resetting forgotten passwords, repairing file system errors, editing configuration files, or uninstalling problematic software.

Accessing single-user mode usually involves interrupting the boot process and entering specific commands or selecting an option from a boot loader menu. Once in this mode, users can execute commands with root privileges, allowing them to make system-level changes. After the necessary repairs are completed, the system can be rebooted into normal multi-user mode. The limited functionality and security implications of single-user mode mean it is typically used only by experienced administrators.
