Yieldbased, sometimes written yield-based, is a term used to describe methods, models, or criteria that prioritize yield—the amount of output or income generated per unit of input—as the primary consideration in decision making. The approach is applied in multiple domains, including finance, agriculture, and energy. It is not tied to a single standardized framework, but rather represents a family of strategies that emphasize output or income per unit of resource.

In finance, yieldbased strategies select assets based on expected or realized income relative to price, such as dividend yield, bond yield, or cash-flow yield. Investors may use yieldbased screens to emphasize income generation while balancing risk, liquidity, and total return. Potential drawbacks include the risk of chasing high yields from lower-quality issuers, sensitivity to interest rate changes, and possible mispricing when macro conditions shift.

In agriculture, yieldbased planning relies on historical or forecasted harvest yields to guide planting, fertilizer use, irrigation, and cultivar selection. This can improve resource efficiency and profitability but may reduce diversification and resilience to adverse conditions.

In energy and manufacturing, yieldbased assessment evaluates output per input, resource conversion efficiency, or energy yield, informing capacity planning, equipment selection, and process optimization. Critics argue that yield alone may not capture risk, quality, or long-term value, and recommend combining yieldbased criteria with other measures such as total return, risk-adjusted performance, or sustainability metrics.
