Yhdistelmäpillerit, known in English as combined oral contraceptive pills or COCPs, are a type of birth control medication used by women. They contain synthetic versions of two hormones, estrogen and progestogen, which work together to prevent pregnancy. These hormones prevent ovulation, meaning the ovaries do not release an egg each month. They also thicken the cervical mucus, making it harder for sperm to reach the egg, and thin the lining of the uterus, making it less likely for a fertilized egg to implant.
