Yhdistelmäindeksiä, often translated as composite index or combined index, is a statistical tool used to measure the performance of a group of related items by combining their individual values into a single figure. Instead of tracking a single asset or variable, a composite index provides a broader overview of a sector, market, or economic phenomenon.

The construction of a composite index involves several key steps. First, a relevant basket of components is selected. These components can be stocks, bonds, commodities, economic indicators, or any other measurable entities that share a common characteristic or purpose. For example, a stock market index like the S&P 500 includes 500 large-cap U.S. companies.

Once the components are chosen, a weighting methodology is applied. This determines the relative importance of each component within the index. Common weighting methods include market capitalization weighting, where larger components have a greater influence, or equal weighting, where all components contribute equally. Price weighting is another method, though less common today.

The index value is then calculated based on the weighted values of its components. This calculation typically involves a base period, to which all subsequent index values are compared. As the prices or values of the components change, the index value fluctuates, reflecting the overall trend of the basket. Yhdistelmäindeksiä are widely used in finance for benchmarking investment portfolios, tracking market trends, and as underlying assets for financial products like exchange-traded funds (ETFs). They also find applications in economics to monitor economic health and in social sciences to track complex social trends.
