Yellamma

Yellamma is a prominent folk goddess worshipped predominantly in the Indian states of Karnataka and Telangana, and to a lesser extent in Maharashtra. She is often considered a form of Renuka, a mother goddess, and is associated with fertility, protection, and the earth. Yellamma is particularly revered by rural communities and is a central deity in many local festivals and rituals.

The mythology surrounding Yellamma varies across different traditions. One prominent narrative describes her as Renuka, the wife of Sage Jamadagni, who was beheaded by her husband at the behest of King Kartavirya Arjuna. Renuka's head is said to have fallen at the place where Yellamma is now worshipped. Another version portrays her as a goddess who was born from the ear of a Brahmin, hence the name Yellamma (Yella meaning ear and Amma meaning mother).

Worship of Yellamma often involves animal sacrifice, particularly goats, in some traditions, though this practice is also a subject of debate and changing customs. Devotees offer prayers, break coconuts, and perform rituals to seek her blessings for health, prosperity, and the well-being of their families. The Jogini system, historically associated with Yellamma worship, involved women dedicating themselves to the goddess, though this practice has faced significant criticism and is largely discouraged. Annual festivals, especially during Navaratri and other auspicious periods, draw large crowds of devotees who gather at her temples to pay homage.
