Yantai

Yantai is a prefecture-level city in Shandong Province, China. It occupies the northern coast of the Shandong Peninsula along the Bohai Sea, opposite the Liaodong Peninsula across the water. The prefecture-level city includes urban districts as well as surrounding rural counties and county-level cities, forming a diverse metropolitan area with a population in the millions.

Historically, Yantai has roots in ancient settlements and later grew as a treaty port during the modern era. It became a center for foreign trade and industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Changyu Pioneer Wine Company, founded in 1892, is one of China’s oldest and most prominent wine producers and remains a notable part of the city’s economy.

Economy: Yantai has a diversified economy with strong agricultural sectors, notably apples and Laiyang pears, seafood, and a growing manufacturing base. The city is also a major port and logistics hub, supporting both domestic trade and international shipping. Wine production remains a symbol of the region’s industry and exports.

Tourism: The Penglai Scenic Area, including the Penglai Pavilion, is a major cultural and natural attraction. The coastal landscape, seafood cuisine, and parks also draw visitors.

Transportation: Yantai is served by Yantai Penglai International Airport and by a port facility on the Bohai Sea. The city is connected to other Shandong cities and northeast coastal markets by rail and highway networks.
