XANESEXAFS

XANESEXAFS is a scientific technique that combines two related X-ray spectroscopy methods: X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure (XANES) and Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS). Both techniques probe the electronic and local atomic environment around specific elements within a material by measuring how the material absorbs X-rays as a function of energy.

XANES, also known as Near-Edge X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (NEXAFS), focuses on the region of the absorption spectrum immediately following an absorption edge. The features in this region are sensitive to the oxidation state, coordination number, and local symmetry of the absorbing atom. It provides information about the unoccupied electronic states of the element of interest.

EXAFS extends to higher photon energies beyond the absorption edge. The oscillations in this region arise from the interference of the outgoing photo-electron wave with waves scattered by neighboring atoms. By analyzing these oscillations, one can determine the distances to the nearest neighbors, their coordination numbers, and the types of atoms surrounding the absorbing element.

Together, XANESEXAFS provides a powerful tool for elemental and chemical state analysis. It is element-specific, meaning one can choose to study a particular element by tuning the X-ray energy to its absorption edge. This allows for the investigation of complex materials, surfaces, interfaces, and dilute species. Applications span a wide range of fields, including materials science, chemistry, physics, biology, and environmental science.
