Windschutz

Windschutz is a term used to describe barriers that reduce wind speed and protect an area from wind effects. It can refer to living vegetation, built structures, or a combination of both. The primary purpose is to lessen wind erosion, desiccation, temperature fluctuations, and wind-related damage to crops, outdoor work, or pedestrians.

Living windbreaks consist of one or more rows of trees or shrubs chosen for height, density, and longevity. A well-designed windbreak gradually reduces wind speed and often consists of a dense outer layer with a more open interior to minimize turbulence. Evergreen species are commonly used for year-round protection, while deciduous plants can provide seasonal benefits. Artificial wind barriers include walls, fences, screens, and perforated structures that supplement or replace vegetation where planting is not feasible.

Applications span agriculture, horticulture, urban planning, and recreation. In agriculture, windschutz protects crops, preserves soil moisture, and can improve germination and yields. In urban settings, wind protection around buildings and courtyards enhances pedestrian comfort, reduces heating demand, and protects entrances from prevailing winds. For artificial barriers, routine inspection for damage and structural integrity is necessary.
