Willets

Willets are large shorebirds belonging to the genus Tringa. There are two recognized species: the Eastern Willet (Tringa semipalmata inornata) and the Western Willet (Tringa semipalmata parva). These birds are commonly found in North and South America, inhabiting coastal areas such as salt marshes, mudflats, and sandy beaches.

Physically, willets are characterized by their long, straight, dark gray bills, long legs, and relatively stout bodies. Their plumage is typically mottled gray or brown on the upperparts and white or buff on the underparts, providing camouflage against their varied habitats. During the breeding season, their coloration can become more rufous. A distinctive feature is the prominent white wing stripe, visible in flight.

Willets are opportunistic feeders, foraging for small invertebrates like crabs, mollusks, insects, and small fish. They often probe the mud or shallow water with their bills to find prey. Their vocalizations include a loud, ringing call often described as "pill-will-willet," which gives them their name.

These birds undertake long migrations. Many populations breed in inland freshwater marshes and grasslands of North America and migrate to coastal areas for the non-breeding season. Their conservation status is generally considered good, though habitat loss and degradation can pose localized threats.
