Widespan

Widespan refers to architectural and structural designs that create wide, unobstructed interior spaces by increasing the distance between primary supports beyond what is typical for a given building type. The term is commonly used in industrial, commercial, and public facilities where large clear spans improve flexibility, visibility, and throughput.

Structural systems used to achieve widespan include steel portal frames and rigid-frame concrete with widely spaced columns, space frames or lattice trusses, arch or vaulted roof systems, and fabric- or membrane-backed structures. The choice depends on loads, height, climate, maintenance, and cost.

Design challenges for widespan buildings include controlling deflection and sway, ensuring adequate lateral stability, and managing wind and seismic forces, as well as thermal movement. Detailing of connections and joints is critical to balance stiffness, weight, and durability.

Benefits often include flexible interior layouts, faster erection with modular components, and reduced obstruction for equipment or vehicles. Drawbacks can include higher initial costs, longer lead times for large members, and more complex maintenance for large-span systems.

Widespan designs are common in warehouses, aircraft hangars, sports facilities, agricultural greenhouses, and exhibition halls, where open plans or unobstructed circulation are important.
