Widegamut

Widegamut is a term used in color science and imaging to describe color spaces and devices capable of reproducing a broad range of colors beyond the standard sRGB gamut. In practice, widegamut includes spaces such as Adobe RGB, ProPhoto RGB, DCI-P3, and Rec.2020, which cover more colors than sRGB and offer expanded color detail in many regions of the spectrum.

In workflow terms, widegamut refers to color spaces and capture or editing spaces that preserve more color information before output. This often involves using widegamut cameras or working in wide color spaces during editing, followed by gamut mapping or soft proofing when delivering to narrower gamuts like sRGB or for printing. Color management systems and ICC profiles are used to translate colors correctly between devices and spaces.

Display and output considerations: to view true widegamut colors, a display must support the corresponding color space and be properly calibrated. Many consumer monitors are limited to sRGB or Rec.709, which can mask the full range of a widegamut workflow. printers and printing pipelines also impose their own output gamuts, requiring appropriate color management to reproduce intended colors.

Relation to other terms: widegamut concerns the chromatic extent of color, not luminance. High dynamic range (HDR) and wide gamut can coexist in a system, but HDR addresses brightness and contrast rather than color range. In practice, successful widegamut work relies on careful calibration, accurate ICC profiles, and consistent color management across capture, editing, and output.
