Welser is a German surname and, as a demonym, can refer to residents of Wels, a city in Upper Austria. The term is most closely associated with the Welser family, a prominent Augsburg-based mercantile and banking dynasty active from the 15th to the 17th centuries.

The project ended amid fiscal strain, mismanagement, and political changes, leading to the reassertion of direct royal authority.
