Wellenbergen

Wellenbergen is a mountain range located along the western coast of Nordmarkia. The name combines the Germanic words for waves and mountains, reflecting the range’s rhythmically undulating ridges and coastal setting. In English sources it is sometimes called the Wave Mountains.

Geography and geology: The range runs roughly 180 kilometers north to south, with summits reaching up to about 1,800 meters. It lies between low coastal plains and higher inland plateaus. The rocks are primarily sedimentary and metamorphic, formed in earlier orogenic events and sculpted by glacial and coastal processes.

Climate and ecology: The climate is maritime-temperate, with strong exposure to Atlantic-influenced weather, high precipitation, frequent fog, and relatively mild winters. The diverse habitats range from coastal scrub and pine forests at the foothills to alpine meadows near the high passes. The area hosts several endemic and boreal species; protected areas include Wellenbergen National Park.

History and human use: Evidence of human activity dates to the Bronze Age, with coastal settlements and trade routes shaping cultural development. In the modern era the range supports tourism, forestry on gentler slopes, and small hydroelectric projects on mountain streams.

Conservation and access: Access is via regional towns at the base and a rail line connecting to Mareport. Conservation efforts focus on habitat protection, erosion control, and sustainable tourism; scientific studies address climate change impacts on glacial remnants and biodiversity.
