Wedgelocking

Wedgelocking is a mechanical assembly method used to secure components together by utilizing the principle of a wedge. In this technique, a tapered or wedge-shaped component is inserted between two mating parts or within a specially designed housing. As the wedge is driven into place, it expands the space it occupies, generating a tight and secure interference fit. This force is distributed radially, creating a strong, locked connection.

The application of wedgelocking is common in various engineering fields. It is often employed in situations where high torque transmission is required, such as in the connection of shafts to gears, pulleys, or couplings. The wedgelocking mechanism can be implemented in several ways. A single wedge can be used, or multiple wedges can be arranged symmetrically. The components being joined are typically designed with corresponding tapered surfaces or internal slots to accommodate the wedge.

The advantages of wedgelocking include its simplicity, reliability, and the ability to achieve a very high clamping force without the need for additional fasteners like bolts or rivets. This can lead to more compact designs and reduced assembly time. However, wedgelocking can also make disassembly more challenging, and precise machining of the mating components is often necessary for optimal performance. The effectiveness of a wedgelock depends on the coefficient of friction between the surfaces, the angle of the wedge, and the applied force.
