Weanability

Weanability refers to the ease with which an infant or young child can transition from milk feeding to solid foods. This process, commonly known as weaning, involves introducing a variety of textures and flavors to a child's diet. Good weanability is often associated with a child's willingness to accept new foods, their ability to chew and swallow them safely, and their overall nutritional transition.

Factors influencing weanability include the child's developmental stage, their sensory experiences, and the approach taken by caregivers. Introducing purees, mashed foods, and eventually finger foods at appropriate times can support this transition. A child's readiness can be observed through cues such as sitting up independently, showing interest in food, and having good head control. Conversely, difficulties with weanability might manifest as extreme pickiness, gagging, or refusal of textures beyond liquids.

Successful weaning contributes to a balanced diet and can help prevent nutritional deficiencies. It also plays a role in developing healthy eating habits and a positive relationship with food.
