Watermarkuri

Watermarkuri is a proposed standard concept for representing watermark-related metadata of digital media as a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI). It is intended to provide a persistent, machine-readable reference that can point to watermark data, provenance information, or verification resources associated with a media item.

Purpose and scope: The idea is to enable separate management of watermark information from the media payload. A watermarkuri would be resolvable by software to fetch or verify watermark parameters, cryptographic proofs, or versioned records without needing to inspect the media file directly.

Structure and syntax: A watermarkuri could use a dedicated URI scheme or an existing scheme with a reserved namespace. Typical implementations describe elements such as the media asset identifier, watermark type, version, and a verification endpoint. Because it is intended to be opaque, implementations should avoid embedding large data in the URI itself.

Usage: Watermarkuris might be embedded in metadata fields (for example, XMP or EXIF), stored in a rights-management database, or returned by a watermarking service during verification. Retrieval workflows would access the URI to obtain the associated watermark data and perform integrity checks.

Status: As of now, watermarkuri is not a universally adopted standard. It has appeared in academic discussions and among some DRM researchers as a design pattern for separating watermark metadata from media content. Adoption, formal standardization, and tooling vary by organization.
