Watchposts

Watchposts are small observation stations established to monitor a territory, detect approaching threats, and provide early warning. They are typically manned day and night and located on elevated ground, along frontiers, coasts, rivers, or routes of travel, where lines of sight cover key areas.

Historically, watchposts have appeared in many cultures, from ancient beacon towers and Roman limes outposts to medieval watchtowers along border walls and mountain passes. They formed networks that allowed rapid signaling between posts using flags, beacons, smoke, fire, or later telegraph and lantern signals.

Construction and staffing: often simple, sturdy structures such as stone towers, wooden platforms, or small huts; staffed by a small detachment or guard, with routines for patrols, reliefs, and reporting.

Modern usage: many traditional watchposts have been superseded by radar, satellite, and electronic surveillance, but some remain in use for border control, maritime surveillance, wildfire lookout in national parks, or as heritage sites and tourism.
