Wakingarousing

Wakingarousing refers to the state of physiological and cognitive activation present when an individual is awake. It includes autonomic nervous system activation (such as racing heart rate and increased skin conductance), heightened alertness, and readiness to perceive and respond to stimuli. It is a component of wakefulness that distinguishes alert, attentive states from drowsy or fatigued states. In this context, wakingarousing is not intended to describe sexual arousal.

The neurobiology of wakingarousing involves networks centered in the brainstem reticular activating system and extending to thalamic and cortical circuits. Neuromodulators such as norepinephrine from the locus coeruleus, orexin neurons in the hypothalamus, and cholinergic, histaminergic, and serotonergic pathways contribute to arousal levels. Functional networks including the salience network, frontoparietal attention network, and interactions with the default mode network regulate transitions between states of high or low arousal.

Measurement and regulation of wakingarousing rely on subjective and objective indicators. People may report changes in perceived alertness, while physiological markers such as heart rate, skin conductance, pupil dilation, and EEG patterns reflect wakeful activity. Circadian rhythms and sleep homeostasis, along with external factors like light, caffeine, stress, medications, and noise, modulate waking arousal. Dysregulation of waking arousal is linked to several conditions, including insomnia, anxiety disorders, PTSD, narcolepsy, and ADHD, emphasizing its role in both health and disease.
