WPATHs

WPATH stands for the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, an international nonprofit organization founded in 1979. The association gathers clinicians, researchers, and educators to improve the health and well-being of transgender and gender-diverse people. In common usage, “WPATHs” may refer to the standards and guidelines published by the organization, especially the Standards of Care (SOC).

The Standards of Care for the Health of Transgender, Nonbinary, and Gender-Diverse People are WPATH’s most influential publications. They are updated periodically to reflect current evidence and professional consensus across disciplines. The SOC provide clinical recommendations for assessment and treatment across the gender-affirming care continuum, including mental health support, medical therapies such as puberty suppression and hormone therapy, surgical options, fertility considerations, voice and communication work, and social transition. The guidelines emphasize individualized, informed-consent-based care and encourage shared decision-making between patients and clinicians, while outlining criteria for access to certain medical interventions.

Beyond the SOC, WPATH produces position statements, clinical resources, educational materials, and policy guidance intended to support clinicians and health systems. The organization also hosts conferences and maintains professional standards for training and ethical practice. WPATH’s work is widely used by healthcare providers, insurers, and policymakers and has influenced national and regional standards of care in many countries. Debates around the SOC often center on timing, eligibility criteria, and the balance between medical intervention and social or psychosocial supports, but the overarching aim is to improve access to evidence-based, patient-centered care.
