Vökvaþrýstikerfi, often translated as hydraulic systems, are closed-loop mechanisms that utilize a fluid, typically oil or water, to transmit power. These systems consist of several key components: a reservoir to store the fluid, a pump to generate flow and pressure, control valves to direct the fluid, actuators (such as cylinders or motors) that convert fluid power into mechanical motion, and the necessary piping or hoses to connect these parts. The fundamental principle of a hydraulic system is Pascal's Law, which states that pressure applied to an enclosed fluid is transmitted undiminished to every portion of the fluid and the walls of the containing vessel.

When a pump is activated, it draws fluid from the reservoir and forces it through the system. Control valves regulate the direction, pressure, and flow rate of the fluid. This controlled fluid then acts upon an actuator. For instance, in a hydraulic cylinder, the pressurized fluid pushes a piston, creating linear motion. In a hydraulic motor, the fluid causes a rotor to spin, generating rotational motion. The fluid then returns to the reservoir, completing the cycle. Hydraulic systems are valued for their ability to generate significant force and precise control, making them suitable for a wide range of applications including heavy machinery, manufacturing equipment, aircraft controls, and vehicle braking systems. Their inherent ability to amplify force and provide smooth operation are key advantages.
