Võnkumised

Võnkumised refer to a phenomenon of collective unrest and social protests in Estonia during the post-Soviet period, specifically in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The term encompasses a range of events, from peaceful demonstrations to violent clashes between protesters and law enforcement.

In the context of Estonian history, võnkumised began to emerge as a response to the country's growing demand for independence from the Soviet Union. The first major protests occurred in 1987, with the so-called Singing Revolutions, where large groups of people gathered in the capital city of Tallinn to sing patriotic songs and make demands for national sovereignty.

Throughout the 1990s, võnkumised intensified, with protesters calling for a range of goals, including the removal of Soviet-era officials, the establishment of an independent government, and the withdrawal of Soviet military forces from Estonia. The protests were often characterized by clashes between protesters and police, resulting in injuries and arrests on both sides.
