This measurement is crucial for a variety of applications, including flood forecasting, water resource management, navigation, and hydrological research.

The most common method for vízállásmérés involves using a water level gauge, which can be a simple staff gauge or a more sophisticated electronic sensor. Staff gauges are graduated rods installed vertically along a riverbank or shoreline. The water level is read directly by observing where the water surface intersects the markings on the gauge. Electronic sensors, such as float-type sensors, pressure transducers, or ultrasonic sensors, can automatically record water levels at regular intervals and transmit the data remotely.

The reference point for water level measurements is typically a datum, which is a defined zero elevation. This datum can be based on a national geodetic network or a local benchmark established for a specific project. Consistent use of a datum ensures that water level data collected over time and across different locations are comparable.
