Véraláfutást, commonly known as a bruise, is a form of bleeding under the skin caused by the rupture of small blood vessels. This typically occurs due to blunt force trauma, such as a fall or a blow to the body. When blood vessels break, blood leaks into the surrounding tissues, creating the characteristic discoloration. Initially, a bruise may appear reddish, but as the blood breaks down, it changes color, often progressing through shades of blue, purple, green, and yellow before fading completely. The color change is due to the breakdown of hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen.

The severity of a bruise can vary greatly. Minor bruises are often superficial and may cause slight discomfort or tenderness. More significant bruises can involve deeper tissues and may be accompanied by swelling and pain. In some cases, a severe bruise can lead to a hematoma, which is a larger collection of blood outside of the blood vessels. While most bruises are minor injuries that heal on their own within a few weeks, persistent or unusually large bruises, or bruises that occur without apparent injury, may warrant medical attention to rule out underlying medical conditions like bleeding disorders or certain medications that affect blood clotting.
