Vékonyfilmelállításnak, often translated as thin-film deposition, is a broad term encompassing various processes used to create thin, solid films on a substrate. These films can range in thickness from a few nanometers to several micrometers. The primary goal is to deposit a layer of material with specific properties, such as electrical conductivity, optical transparency, or mechanical hardness, onto a surface.

There are two main categories of thin-film deposition: physical vapor deposition (PVD) and chemical vapor deposition (CVD). PVD methods involve the physical transfer of material from a source to the substrate, often through vacuum processes. Examples include sputtering, where ions bombard a target material, ejecting atoms that then deposit onto the substrate, and evaporation, where a material is heated until it vaporizes and condenses on the substrate.

CVD methods, on the other hand, rely on chemical reactions occurring at or near the substrate surface. In a typical CVD process, gaseous precursor chemicals are introduced into a reaction chamber. These precursors react to form a solid film that deposits on the heated substrate. Plasma-enhanced CVD (PECVD) is a variation that uses a plasma to promote the chemical reactions at lower temperatures.

Thin-film deposition is a critical technology in numerous industries, most notably in the manufacturing of semiconductors, where intricate layers of various materials are deposited to create integrated circuits. It is also used in the production of optical coatings for lenses and displays, protective coatings for tools and components, and in the creation of solar cells. The precise control over film thickness, composition, and structure offered by these techniques makes them indispensable for modern technological advancements.
