Väärtusloomeahelad, often translated as value chains, represent the full range of activities a firm employs to bring a product or service from conception to reality and to the marketplace. This concept, popularized by Michael Porter, helps businesses understand how they create value for their customers and how they can achieve a competitive advantage. A value chain consists of primary activities and support activities.

Primary activities directly involve the creation, sale, and servicing of a product or service. These typically include inbound logistics, operations, outbound logistics, marketing and sales, and service. Inbound logistics deals with receiving, storing, and distributing inputs. Operations transform inputs into the final product. Outbound logistics involves collecting, storing, and distributing the product to customers. Marketing and sales focus on persuading customers to purchase. Service includes activities that enhance or maintain the product's value after sale.

Support activities enable the primary activities to function efficiently. These include firm infrastructure, human resource management, technology development, and procurement. Infrastructure encompasses general management, planning, and finance. Human resource management involves recruiting, training, and compensating employees. Technology development focuses on improving products and processes. Procurement deals with purchasing the inputs used in the value chain. By analyzing each component of the value chain, companies can identify areas for improvement, cost reduction, and differentiation, ultimately leading to enhanced profitability and customer satisfaction. Understanding and optimizing the value chain is crucial for strategic decision-making and competitive positioning.
