Vääntövauriot

Vääntövauriot, commonly known as sprains, are injuries to ligaments, which are tough fibrous tissues that connect bones to each other at joints. These injuries typically occur when a joint is forced beyond its normal range of motion, causing the ligament to stretch or tear. The most frequent locations for vääntövauriot are the ankle, knee, and wrist.

The severity of vääntövauriot can vary significantly. A mild sprain involves overstretching of the ligament with minimal tearing. A moderate sprain involves partial tearing of the ligament, leading to more significant pain, swelling, and instability. A severe sprain, or a complete tear, occurs when the ligament is ripped apart, often resulting in a complete loss of joint function and a feeling of a "pop" at the time of injury.

Symptoms of vääntövauriot commonly include pain, swelling, bruising, tenderness, and limited ability to move the affected joint. Pain can range from a dull ache to sharp and intense. Swelling usually appears soon after the injury and can spread to surrounding areas. Bruising may develop over a few days as blood collects under the skin.

Diagnosis of vääntövauriot is usually based on a physical examination and the patient's description of the injury. Imaging techniques such as X-rays may be used to rule out fractures, while MRI scans can provide more detailed images of ligament damage. Treatment typically involves the RICE protocol: Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. Pain relief medication may also be prescribed. For more severe sprains, physical therapy is often recommended to restore strength, flexibility, and stability to the affected joint. In rare cases of complete ligament tears, surgical intervention might be necessary.
