Vävnadsinterstitiet, often referred to as the interstitium, is the space between cells in a tissue. It is not a void but a fluid-filled compartment containing a complex network of extracellular matrix. This matrix is primarily composed of collagen, elastin, and glycosaminoglycans, which provide structural support and regulate cellular processes. The interstitial fluid within this space is derived from blood plasma and bathes all cells, facilitating the exchange of nutrients, oxygen, and waste products.

The interstitium plays a crucial role in various physiological functions.
