Vätskeförlusten, or fluid loss, refers to the decrease in the body's total water content. Water is essential for numerous bodily functions, including temperature regulation, nutrient transport, and waste removal. When the amount of fluid leaving the body exceeds the amount entering, a state of dehydration occurs.

The primary ways the body loses fluid are through sweat, urine, and respiration. Excessive sweating, common during physical activity or in hot environments, can lead to significant fluid loss. The kidneys regulate water balance by producing urine, and the volume of urine produced can vary depending on hydration levels and other factors. Even breathing contributes to fluid loss as water vapor is exhaled.

Symptoms of fluid loss can range from mild to severe. Mild dehydration may manifest as thirst, dry mouth, and reduced urine output. As fluid loss increases, symptoms can progress to fatigue, dizziness, headache, and muscle cramps. Severe dehydration can be life-threatening, leading to confusion, rapid heartbeat, low blood pressure, and a lack of consciousness.

Fluid loss can be caused by various factors. Insufficient fluid intake is a common contributor, especially in individuals who do not actively drink enough. Vomiting and diarrhea, often associated with illness, can also lead to rapid and substantial fluid and electrolyte loss. Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, and the use of some medications, like diuretics, can also increase fluid loss. Maintaining adequate hydration by regularly consuming fluids is crucial for preventing and managing fluid loss.
