Västkustens

Västkustens, often referred to simply as Västkusten, denotes the western coastline of Sweden along the Kattegat and parts of the Skagerrak. The region includes Bohuslän, with parts of Västra Götalands län and Hallands län, and is best known for its rocky shores, archipelagos and a maritime climate. The coastline runs roughly from Strömstad in the north to Varberg and the surrounding coast in the south.

Geography and nature: The coast features among Sweden's most extensive archipelagos, granite shores, skerries and sheltered inlets. The northern Bohuslän coast is especially rugged and dotted with boating villages such as Strömstad, Smögen, Fjällbacka, Kungshamn and Lysekil. The area includes Kosterhavet National Park (established 2009), Sweden's first marine national park, protecting the sea around the Koster Islands. The climate is temperate maritime, with cool summers and mild winters compared to inland Sweden.

Economy and culture: The West Coast has long depended on fishing and maritime industries, which continue alongside aquaculture and seafood processing. Tourism is a major economic activity, drawn by the archipelago, sailing, fishing, diving and coastal hiking. Towns such as Strömstad, Smögen, Fjällbacka and Lysekil attract visitors year-round. The cuisine emphasizes seafood, notably shellfish and crayfish, and local harbor culture remains visible in markets, seafood restaurants and summer events.

History and representation: The coast has a long maritime history, with historic shipyards and fishing communities. The region is popular for nature protection and outdoor recreation. The term Västkusten is widely used in Sweden to denote this coastal area, distinct from the Baltic coast to the east and the southern Öresund region.
