Värviteadust, often translated as color science, is a multidisciplinary field that studies the perception, measurement, and behavior of color. It draws upon principles from physics, chemistry, biology, psychology, and art. At its core, color science seeks to understand how humans see color and how this perception can be quantified and reproduced.

Physics plays a crucial role in understanding color as electromagnetic radiation within the visible spectrum. Wavelengths of light correspond to different colors. When light interacts with objects, certain wavelengths are absorbed and others are reflected, which is what we perceive as the object's color. Chemistry contributes by explaining the molecular structures and properties of pigments and dyes that absorb and reflect light in specific ways.

From a biological and psychological perspective, color science investigates the human visual system, particularly the role of the cone cells in the retina, which are sensitive to different wavelengths. It also examines how the brain processes this information to create the sensation of color. This includes understanding phenomena like color constancy, where an object's perceived color remains relatively stable under different lighting conditions.

The measurement of color is a key aspect of color science, employing instruments like spectrophotometers and colorimeters to objectively quantify color properties. These measurements are vital in industries such as printing, textiles, and digital imaging, where consistent and accurate color reproduction is essential. Color science also informs the development of color models and color spaces, which provide frameworks for defining and manipulating colors digitally.
