Värivirheisiin

Värivirheisiin is a Finnish term used to describe errors in color reproduction across media, including print, digital displays, textiles, and other manufactured goods. It refers to deviations between the intended color specifications and the color that is actually produced or perceived.

Common types of värivirheisiin include hue shifts, where colors move toward a different hue; changes in saturation or brightness; metamerism, where colors look different under varying lighting; and misregistration in layered printing, where color layers do not align. In digital contexts, color management issues can cause screens to display colors differently from the design unless ICC profiles are applied and devices are calibrated. In textiles and paints, batch-to-batch variation can also create color differences.

Causes and measurement: Värivirheisiin arise from differences in color gamuts between devices, lighting and viewing conditions, aging or wear of inks, and calibration drift of instruments. Quality control often uses spectrophotometers or colorimeters to measure colors and applies color difference metrics such as Delta E in CIELAB space to quantify perceptible differences.

Mitigation and control: Effective color management is essential. This includes using ICC profiles, soft and hard proofs, and standardized viewing conditions with defined illuminants. Maintaining calibrated printers, monitors, and scanners, and using reliable color libraries or spot colors (for example Pantone) helps improve consistency. In production, process controls, known-good color standards, and consistent materials (inks, dyes, substrates) reduce variegation. Regular quality checks against target colors help detect and address färivirheisiin before final output.
