Välimuistipolitiikka, also known as buffer policy or cache policy, refers to the set of rules and heuristics that govern how data is stored, retrieved, and discarded in a temporary memory area (buffer). The primary goal of a buffer policy is to improve system performance by reducing latency and balancing resource usage. In database systems, for example, a buffer policy determines which pages of a database are kept in memory and which are written back to disk when the buffer pool becomes full. In networking, a buffer policy defines how packets are queued and dropped under congestion.

Common types of buffer policies include least recently used (LRU), most recently used (MRU), first in first out (FIFO), and random replacement. Each has trade‑offs in terms of computational overhead, cache hit rate, and suitability for different workloads. Algorithms such as clock, aging, and adaptive replacement cache (ARC) attempt to combine the strengths of multiple strategies for better performance in heterogeneous environments.

Välimuistipolitiikka also affects system determinism and fairness. For example, a strict FIFO policy may yield predictable eviction times but can suffer from cache thrashing in write‑intensive scenarios. In contrast, an LRU strategy often achieves higher hit rates but requires additional tracking data. Many operating systems expose tunable parameters allowing administrators to adjust the buffer policy for specific workloads or hardware constraints.

The study and optimization of buffer policies remain active research areas in computer science. Advances in machine‑learning‑based predictive replacement algorithms promise to further enhance cache efficiency by anticipating access patterns in real time.
