Välandia

Välandia is a fictional sovereign state created for speculative world-building. It is situated in a temperate maritime region, comprising a mainland peninsula and a cluster of islands along a sheltered coastline. The landscape ranges from forested uplands to fertile lowlands and alpine valleys in the interior. The capital and largest city is Valenford. The official language is Välandian, with minority communities speaking neighboring regional languages. The population is estimated at around 5.5 million.

Välandia is modeled as a parliamentary republic. The president serves as the ceremonial head of state, while a prime minister heads the government and policy. The unicameral legislature, the Folkting, has 120 seats and is elected by proportional representation, with elections held every four years. The judiciary is independent, and local governments administer districts.

Evidence of settlement dates to early medieval times; Välandia emerged as a unified state in the 17th century through a royal charter, and achieved full independence in 1832 after a peaceful transition from a regional empire. A constitutional framework was adopted in 1887, and since the late 20th century Välandia has participated in regional economic accords and neighborhood collaborations.

Välandia maintains a diversified economy with services accounting for the largest share of GDP. Key sectors include finance, information technology, renewable energy, shipping, and agriculture. The country emphasizes green growth, with hydroelectric and wind power providing a sizable portion of electricity. Public services and infrastructure support a high standard of living.
