Vähävolatiilimuistia, also known as non-volatile memory, is a type of computer memory that retains data even when power is turned off. Unlike volatile memory, such as RAM, which loses its contents when the power is interrupted, non-volatile memory can store data permanently or for extended periods. This makes it ideal for use in devices where data must be retained, such as flash drives, solid-state drives (SSDs), and embedded systems.

Non-volatile memory is typically classified into two main types: flash memory and magnetic memory. Flash memory is further divided into NOR and NAND types, each with its own characteristics and applications. NOR flash is often used in code storage for embedded systems due to its fast read speeds, while NAND flash is commonly found in USB drives and SSDs because of its high storage density and cost-effectiveness.

Magnetic memory, on the other hand, uses magnetic fields to store data. It is less common in modern consumer electronics but is still used in some high-capacity storage solutions, such as hard disk drives (HDDs). Magnetic memory is known for its durability and resistance to data loss, making it suitable for applications where data integrity is critical.

The advantages of non-volatile memory include its ability to retain data without power, faster read and write speeds compared to traditional magnetic storage, and lower power consumption. However, it also has some limitations, such as a limited number of write cycles and slower write speeds compared to volatile memory. Despite these limitations, non-volatile memory has become a fundamental component in modern computing and electronics, enabling the development of more efficient and reliable devices.
