Temperature is a critical factor as it provides the activation energy necessary for the cross-linking reactions between polymer chains mediated by sulfur. Typically, vulcanization temperatures range from 140°C to 180°C, but the optimal temperature depends on the type of rubber and the curing agent used. Higher temperatures can accelerate the process but also increase the risk of scorching, an undesirable premature vulcanization.

Pressure is often applied during vulcanization, especially in molding processes. It helps to ensure uniform heat distribution throughout the rubber compound and to maintain close contact between the rubber and the mold surfaces, preventing voids and improving the surface finish of the final product. The required pressure varies with the application and the method of vulcanization.

Time is another crucial variable. The duration of vulcanization must be sufficient to achieve the desired degree of cross-linking for optimal physical properties, such as tensile strength, elasticity, and abrasion resistance. However, over-curing can lead to degradation of the rubber and deterioration of its properties. The optimal curing time is determined through laboratory testing and is often referred to as the cure rate. The interplay of these three factors – temperature, pressure, and time – along with the specific chemical formulation of the rubber compound, dictates the success of the vulcanization process and the performance of the finished rubber article.
