Vools

Vools are a fictional concept used in speculative fiction and related online communities. They refer to a class of creatures or intelligences that appear across multiple, non-canon works, with no single agreed-upon definition. Because vools are not part of a unified canon, descriptions vary by author and medium.

Most depictions describe vools as possessing amorphous or translucent bodies, often capable of bioluminescence. Size ranges from small to large. They may be solitary or form loose clusters; intelligence is portrayed variably, from instinct-driven to highly semi-sentient or cooperative. Communication ranges from chemical signals to music-like vocalizations or telepathic links.

Habitats include underground caves, fungal forests, ruined megastructures, or alien ecosystems. Diets are inconsistently defined: detritivores consuming mineral matter; energy scavengers; or symbiotic relationships with other organisms.

In fiction and fan communities, vools serve as plot devices to evoke mystery, to explore themes of adaptation and otherness, or as setting elements that challenge characters.
