Volkshochschule

The Volkshochschule (VHS) is a system of public adult education centers in German-speaking countries, primarily in Germany, Austria, and parts of Switzerland. It offers affordable courses to adults for lifelong learning, skill development, and civic education.

The term and the movement originated in the early 20th century in Germany, aiming to provide accessible education for the working class. Since then, Volkshochschulen have remained a core part of the public education system, adapting to social change and labor market needs. They emphasize lifelong learning, inclusion, and broad participation.

VHS centers are typically publicly funded and run by cities, districts, or states, often with support from regional authorities. They operate within a national or regional network and coordinate programs across institutions. Courses are mainly non-academic but may lead to certificates or qualifications related to professional training. Fees are generally lower than private providers, with various subsidies or discounts available to students.
