Vluchtprocedures

Vluchtprocedures, or flight procedures, are standardized operational methods used in aviation to ensure safe, orderly, and efficient aircraft movement. They cover pre-flight planning, en-route navigation, terminal area operations, and aerodrome procedures.

Key elements include departure procedures (Standard Instrument Departures, SIDs), arrival procedures (Standard Terminal Arrival Routes, STARs), and instrument approach procedures (IAPs) such as ILS and RNAV approaches, as well as missed approaches, holding patterns, and altitude or speed restrictions. These procedures are designed to organize traffic flow, reduce controller workload, and provide predictable routes for pilots, especially in instrument meteorological conditions.

Vluchtprocedures are defined within regulatory frameworks that promote international standardization. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) publishes SARPs and procedures that are implemented by national authorities such as the FAA in the United States and EASA in Europe. Aeronautical information publications (AIPs) and chart providers (for example Jeppesen) publish standardized flight procedures for airports and airspace.

Most flight procedures are designed for instrument flight rules (IFR) operations, but many also apply under visual flight rules (VFR) with local pattern rules and noise abatement procedures. Advances in navigation, such as performance-based navigation (PBN), RNAV, and RNP, have expanded the range of available procedures, improving efficiency and airspace capacity while maintaining safety.

In practice, flight procedures support air traffic control separation, situational awareness, and consistency across operators, airports, and countries.
