Vitamiinivalmisteita, known in English as vitamin supplements, are products formulated to provide vitamins in concentrations that may exceed typical dietary intake from food alone. They can be found as tablets, capsules, powders, liquids, or gummies and often contain isolated or combined vitamins such as A, B-complex, C, D, E, and K, sometimes with added minerals or other bioactive compounds.

The purpose of these preparations is to support nutritional adequacy, particularly in populations with dietary restrictions, increased physiological needs, or specific health conditions. Common indications include vitamin D deficiency in low-sunlight regions, thiamine supplementation in alcohol dependence, and multivitamin use in older adults to counter age-related nutrient losses. However, evidence for benefit in healthy individuals taking multivitamins remains mixed, with large randomized studies showing limited impact on chronic disease prevention.

Side effects can arise from excessive intakes, notably hypervitaminosis A, vitamin D toxicity, and interactions affecting drug metabolism. Sensitivities to excipients such as gelatin, artificial sweeteners, or dyes can also cause allergic reactions. Because product quality varies, studies on labelling accuracy and bioavailability continue to inform consumer choice.

In most European countries, including Finland, vitamin supplements are regulated as food supplements and must comply with safety standards set by national authorities. Manufacturers are required to provide evidence of safe dosage levels and proper nutritional claims. Consumers are advised to follow dosing instructions, seek professional guidance for high-risk groups, and consider whole-food sources as the primary means of satisfying dietary requirements.
