Viscosity is a fundamental property of fluids that describes their resistance to flow. A fluid with high viscosity, like honey, flows slowly, while a fluid with low viscosity, like water, flows easily.

These differences can arise from a variety of factors. The chemical composition of a fluid is a primary determinant of its viscosity. Larger or more complex molecules tend to interact more strongly, leading to higher viscosity. For example, long-chain polymers in lubricants significantly increase their viscosity compared to simple liquids. Temperature also plays a crucial role. Generally, the viscosity of liquids decreases as temperature increases, as molecules gain kinetic energy and overcome intermolecular forces more easily. Conversely, the viscosity of gases typically increases with temperature, as molecular collisions become more frequent and energetic, impeding flow.

Pressure can also influence viscosity, although its effect is usually less pronounced than that of temperature for liquids. For gases, increased pressure generally leads to increased viscosity. Furthermore, the presence of suspended particles or dissolved substances can alter a fluid's viscosity. For instance, adding sugar to water increases its viscosity. In some cases, viscosity is not constant but changes with the rate of shear applied, a phenomenon known as non-Newtonian behavior. These differences in viscosity are critical in numerous scientific and engineering applications, including fluid dynamics, material processing, lubrication, and the design of pipelines and pumps. Understanding and quantifying these differences allows for more efficient and predictable system operation.
